Inventing what’s next
“Inventing What’s Next” encapsulates what we do at IBM Research. Scientists, engineers and designers are working around the world to advance IBM in the areas of Hybrid Cloud, AI, Quantum and Science. The Research group within IBM spans internationally with almost 3,000 engineers and scientists. Their fundamental research and technology advancements drive the future of IBM.
I was fortunate to work with a really great team to design and build the next iteration of the IBM Research site. This new version tells our story in a much more compelling way, with a simplified architecture, clearer writing and more engaging visuals. Throughout we leverage modularity and push IBM’s Carbon Design System. We designed the site in parallel with developing the brand guidelines for IBM Research. During the process we honed our photography and developed a more experimental illustration style. Throughout the site we incorporated slashes, a key graphic element of the IBM Research brand, in both bold and subtle ways.

Leadspace
When visiting the landing page, our primary goal was to drive visitors to our four focus areas: Hybrid Cloud, AI, Quantum and Science. A primary brand element are slashes, which rotate progressively at specific angles within a grid. The hover for each area was an opportunity to add this small brand element. Over time, the leadspace has evolved to showcase our newest work and drive visitors to the blog.
Focus areas
My favorite pages on the new site are the four focus area pages: Hybrid Cloud, AI, Quantum and Science. In addition to highlighting the newest work from IBM Research’s many teams, they each have their own leadspace collage and animation created by the very talented Yijia Xie and Sumi Lee. Each collage was built in a way where they for on page load, then animate out as a visitor scrolls down the page.
